Biolink Corridors for Gliders - Seymour Urban Landcare

After our very successful tree planting day on Whiteheads creek in July last year, as part of the Bioblitz project, we were amazed to see how well the seedlings had coped with the floods. Some had had all their roots exposed, but they were still alive!

We had to do quite some work to recover and reposition many metal tree guards and stakes, and spread more mulch, as the water flow had caused a lot of erosion. Many thanks to Richard Telford & family and to Peter Mitchell for their ongoing support and hard work.

This year we will continue restoring habitats along the Whiteheads creek, and we’ll do it as part of a bigger project, the “Biolink Corridors for Gliders in Seymour” that aims at encouraging young people to volunteer for the environment.

Our project will be delivered with the support of Hughes Creek Catchment Collaborative Landcare, in partnership with BEAM Mitchell Environment Group and the Central Victorian Biolinks Alliance.

The first event will be on the 9th of June at Seymour College, where ecologist Chris Pocknee (Biolinks Alliance) will give a presentation on Gliders, as Year 11 and 12 VCAL students have started building nest boxes for gliders in the woodwork class with Technology Teacher, David Stute.

Another presentation on this topic will be delivered for a broader audience in Seymour, with date still to be confirmed; follow Seymour Urban Landcare Facebook and Instagram page for updates, or keep an eye out for our next email.

On the 25th of June from 10 am to 12:30 pm there will be a tree planting day on Whiteheads Creek (access from 72 Oak St, please find all details on flyer), followed by a shared lunch. To attend, please RSVP at SeymourUrbanLandcare@gmail.com. Please feel free to share the attached flyer with your contacts.

Later in winter there will be spotlight walks along the creek, where we’ll be looking for gliders and other native nocturnal fauna.

In spring we will inspect fifty nest boxes that had been previously installed for a previous project on gliders (available at this link ), when direct seeding was done along Lambing Gully road to create a wildlife corridor.

Anyone is welcome to join us for the Gliders project, just get in touch with Vanessa at Seymoururbanlandcare@gmail.com to find out more about it.
